Mod Information

Xcom forces were armed with Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS).

The new generation of AWACS allowed significantly increase radius of detection. Which is especially important for low-flying and stealth targets. Radius of detection comparable with conventional underground Small radar system. Wait! Did I say "conventional underground radar"? It's ridiculous. Underground radars are not allowed because it is impossible.

Theoretically we can intercept and decode UFO transmissions, but even in this case we cannot determine the correct position of UFO. Therefore AWACS crafts is our eyes and ears. AWACS is most important part of our line of defense.

Install Instructions


1. Copy the archive content to the "user\mods\" folder of your OpenXcom installation.
2. If you only want add new aircrafts to your current game, then choose AWACS mod in Options-MODS submenu.
3. If you looking for a new challenge, choose AWACS mod and(!) AWACS.scenario mod in Options-MODS submenu. Then start a new game.


Just find and delete folders "AWACS" and "AWACS.scenario" from the "user\mods\" folder of your OpenXcom installation.



1. AWACS ruleset
AWACS ruleset only adds AWACS and HAWKEYE aircraft to your game. You can buy it, fly back and forth, detect UFOs, enjoy by a new ufopaedia entries. Nothing more, because in regular OpenXcom using AWACS looks like a cheating.

For manufacture a DARKSTAR should be completed the "Unmanned Aircraft" research project.

2. AWACS.scenario ruleset
Can works well with regular OpenXcom, but I highly recommend to use OpenXcom Extended: http://www.openxcom.com/mod/openxcom-extended

You should begin a new game because the AWACS.scenario ruleset deletes Small radar system and Large radar system (you have been warned;)). You cannot build and use any kind of underground radars.

Starting base contains one Skyranger, one Interceptor and one HAWKEYE. Aircrafts of the AWACS class (HAWKEYE, AWACS and DARKSTAR) performs the function of radars.

AWACS and HAWKEYE has radius of detection comparable with Small radar system. Average chance of UFOs detection is 40% (* works only in OpenXcom Extended).

For manufacture a DARKSTAR should be completed the "Unmanned Aircraft" research project.

Combat aircrafts of Xcom have average chance of detection 70% (* works only in OpenXcom Extended).

Hyperwave decoder cannot determine position of UFO (* works only in OpenXcom Extended), but can intercept and decode hyperwave transmissions. Therefore an UFO must be detected by AWACS or any other craft, then Hyperwave decoder during 30 min decodes transmissions and gives additional information about this UFO and his mission.

    Minor fixes.

    Fixed several mistakes in the ruleset.
    Updated sprites.
    Fixed translation.

    Added HAWKEYE and DARKSTAR aircrafts.
    AWACS a bit rebalanced because of HAWKEYE and DARKSTAR.
    Added "ru" strings.

    First release.
    Introduced the AWACS aircraft.

Please change
reduce the size of both awacs and ground based radars then there well be no need to remove the radar sites. In fact you should make radar a 2 tier researched project once Alien alloys are researched you can start with 1/3 the size of standard starting out radar for small and and 1/2 the size for large standard then upon research the radar from stander while still greatly reduced in size of both large and small can be built. This mod not just a mod, this is more as a proof of concept: - Possibility of a balanced game without conventional radars. Therefore i can't to change the AWACS.scenario as you suggested. But if this scenario looks too hardcore, you can to make your own scenario.
